Playing cupid isn’t a reward; it’s Millie’s punishment. If she doesn’t find repressed, divorcee, Brooke, true love in the next thirty days, Millie’ll lose the one thing in this life sentence worth fighting for, her partner. Just two problems: First, Millie sucks at matchmaking. Second, too young, too hot, Elliott keeps getting in Millie’s way.
Play Fling is a romantic comedy about a really bad beginner cupid, Millie, and a woman who doesn’t realize that she is searching for love, Brooke. Brooke was married for 15 years before asking her husband, Jason, for a divorce. Now she is trying to find a life for herself. Her friends have gradually abandoned her; she’s gone back to school in hope of helping her eBay business. Somewhere along the way, she has found a new friend, Millie. Millie isn’t all that reliable, frequently late to meet Brooke and seemingly has nothing in common, but she’s the only friend Brooke has.
We find out that Millie was Kiki Kent, a socialite, in her previous life and has been sentenced to be cupid for her “prior life of gross indifference”. She’s self absorbed, not so bright at times, but is really trying to do her job. She has been paired with AJ, a more senior cupid. AJ and Millie are supposed to work as platonic partners but Millie has fallen in love with AJ. She is desperate to match Brooke because if she doesn’t, AJ will be taken away from from her. Millie sums up her situation with her thoughts of what she wants to tell Brooke:
“ You see, Brooke, I’m a new cupid, a felon of sorts on community service so to speak, and I’m crap at it. I haven’t made a match in the three years I’ve been stuck in this mess. However, you, Brooke, are in luck. I have vowed to find you love it it’s the last thing I do. And It might be. So, while you were waiting for me today, all embarrassed and angry, I was picking your lock, invading your apartment and begging the universe for a break in your case so I could isolate some schmuck to love you, ditch off one of these bangles here, and get back to who I used to be. Fabulous. See? No need to get mad. No need to fret. Get on board, help me help you. All that shit. Sound Good?”
Brooke meets a much younger man at the bookstore who she is attracted to. She find out that he is her prof’s TA and responsible for grading her papers. What she doesn’t know is that Elliott has been watching her for weeks, and is attracted to her as well. They seem to meet everywhere, and gradually learn more about each other, including a passion for “yarding”.
Play Fling is a thoroughly delightful book! The subtitle is “A Misfit Cupid Book.” Just the name gives you a clue about how funny this story will be. The story rollicks along taking the reader for a ride. Millie is desperate to stay with AJ so she becomes determined to match Brooke with Jason, regardless of what else is happening to indicate that Jason isn’t interested in getting back together with his wife and Brooke is increasingly taken with Elliott. We add in the characters of Gordon, Elliott’s gay cousin who is interested in Jason, Jason’s mother, who is determined that Brooke and Jason get back together, and Michelle who is interested in Elliott and you can imagine how much fun the reader is going to have!
The reader finds themselves cheering for characters, cringing at points, and flipping the pages to find out what comes next. This is a great book that you truly must experience!
Ms. Scott has a free e-book available on Smashwords right now.
Blurb: The stupid cupid herself, Millicent Match, gets her sentence in Karma Court. The person she wronged in life as former socialite Kiki Kent has been waiting a long time to serve this dish…cold.
