Today we have a special guest to the blog! Jean Hart Stewart is the author of many books, but has a new release out – For Love Is New. In honor of this new book, she is doing a whirlwind virtual book tour. When I found out that she would be visiting my blog, I asked her why did she write this book at this time? Here’s her answer:
Why oh why did I wrote this particular book at this time? Delighted to answer, since For Love Is New means so much to me.
I’ve always adored historicals, ever since I got hooked on romances when I was thirteen. Pride and Prejudice is the book who grabbed me way back then (please don’t ask how many years ago because I refuse to answer) P and P is still my favorite book, and I look for unusual copies of it in used books stores whenever I get the chance.
Then I became enamored of King Arthur and Merlin. That interest is evident in my mage and druid books. But all the time I was writing those, I was doing off and on research on the Duke of Wellington and the Peninsular Wars. I have simply tons of research on that fascinating period. Eventually I started to wonder about Napoleon’s escape from Elba. It seems improbable he managed that escape and his return to power in France.
And there was my idea of this book. What about the British secret service? Were they doing anything to try to stop Napoleon? The diplomats refused to heed Wellington’s warnings. Was anybody in England paying attention? For Love is New is a love story between two people who are prying attention and try to stop him, and the villain they try to keep from getting money to Napoleon. My villain is the darkest I’ve ever written about. I mean, really, really bad.
You’ll hate him, but I hope love Christian and Juliet.

You may say to yourself, why do I want a copy of this book? Tell me more! Here’s the blurb from the back:
Lord Christian Cherne, recently invalided out of the Penninsular Army, is looking forward to the pleasures of London. He has one duty to discharge before he searches for a mistress. He must offer his protection to Lady Juliet Sloan. Paul Sloan was killed in battle, leaving Christian a horrifying letter of his sadistic treatment at the hands of Roger Gullis. To his dismay, Christian finds Gullis sitting in Lady Juliet’s parlor when he comes to call. All his plans must now concentrate on keeping Juliet safe. Christian further suspects Gullis of being a traitor and his fears for Juliet increase.
Juliet is attracted, but suspicious of which man is the traitor. As attraction between Juliet and Christian grows, Gullis turns cruelly vengeful.
Will Juliet and Christian be able to thwart Gullis’ plans to help bring Napoleon back to power, even as he finds wicked retribution for his rejection by the two lovers he has come to hate?
Now, I think this book sound pretty interesting, and it’s made my wish list 🙂
Jean loves to hear from her readers. She was recently chatting with Book Junkie, and when asked if she could ask her readers any question, what would it be? Her answer was: “Oh lordy, I’d like to ask them so much. Wish they’d go on line and tell me what they really like in romance fiction. Character, emotion, plot????? What makes you buy a book? Cover, blurb, word of mouth, price? I could go on and on, but will exert a little self-control her and stop. Just comment asking if the readers have any questions for me, OK? Love being interviewed, and enjoy feedback and getting to know a reader.”

Hmm ok how bout I answer Jean’s questions. What I love about romance, main thing is the emotional pull between the two characters followed by the setting, the plot is in there somewhere but if the emotions aren’t there then it’s not worth reading. Why I buy a book, main one is word of mouth, if someone I know really enjoyed a book, I’ll check it out even if the cover or blurb may not be all that hot. I trust my friends 🙂
To ask Jean…oh wow I usually ask off the wall questions, like what is your fav food to snack on while writing? Does it change with each story? Do your surrounds and life situations influence what you are writing?
I could go on and one, but please put my name in the hat for the drawing Barb and good luck to all who comment 🙂

Good luck – great answer Miranda! I hope Jean enjoys everyone’s comments!

Thought I answered this, but don’t see it showing up. When I write I can’t stand a distraction. No music, no noise, just me and my hopefully productive brain. Sometimes I have a handful of sesame covered almonds, my secret vice. That’s been the same for several years. Love the fool things. I try to bury my personal feelings if I’m kinda sad, but definitely do the humorou scenes when I’m happy. Fortunately I’m a very happy person.Good questions, girl. Thanks for coming.

hi Barb! i love reading historical fiction. i’m always amazed at how writers “fill in the gaps” and relate events while telling stories about ordinary people caught up in them. this sounds like a very interesting read! hope i get a copy. thanks to you and to Jean for the giveaway.
Barb
Thanks for the comment! My finger are crossed for you!
Jean
Your question’s a very good one, but that’s exactly what’s the most fun about writing historicals. Making sure the story is logical and complies with actual events, without one getting in the way of the other. And having the events heighten the sexual tension with each scene. Really lots of fun. Thanks for you questions, Jean

Since I don’t really have particular questions for Jean, I will answer a couple of her’s 🙂
What I really enjoy in romance books is of course, the main focus on the hero and heroine. I love reading how they fall in love and seeing how their emotional connection gradually builds and intensifies. Then a great plot of course is just like the icing on a cake! As for what makes me buy a book… it would mostly likely be the word of mouth and from reading blogs and reviews. Though of course, if the cover or blurb is able to catch my attention, I would definitely look for its reviews to see what others think.
Congrats on the new release and thanks for the giveaway!

Thanks for your comments… I’m always so interested in what readers think. It’s really a help, as any writer can tell you.

I absolutely love Romance novels. In fact, I do a blog reviewing clean romance novels. I really enjoy romances that have both good character development and a substantial plot. It’s no fun if nothing is really happening, nor is it fun if the main characters don’t grow or learn or believably fall in love.
I think if I had a question it would be, what keeps you motivated to keep writing and working on a book from start to finish. It’s a ton of work from research to drafts to editing and I’m sure much more. What is it that makes you want to do it? What drives you to write?
Thanks for the giveaway!
Jean
Wow, what a good question, Jen. I can’t answer it. Have no idea what keeps me motivated. It’s aimply something I have to do. When I get a really good idea there’s no question in my mind I’ll keep at it till I finish it. Good thing, since For Love is New took a long, long time. I wrote a couple other paranormal romances in the meantime, but FLIN is a personal achievement for me. Thanks for your thoughtful question. Jean
