Interview with David Burton, author of Broken – A Paranormal Romance

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Today we are welcoming David Burton to the blog.  He is the author of several books, but is here talking about his most recent novel – Broken – A Paranormal Romance. He’s going to answer a few questions for us.  Continue to read to the bottom to find out more about his book and where it is available.

Barb – Tell us about yourself.

David – First, thanks so much for having me!

I currently live near Toronto with my partner and our three boys. We adopted them (they’re brothers) almost four years ago and our life has been so enriched because of them. I am a very lucky man.

Barb – When did you begin writing?

David – My mother read to me from a very young age, and when she wasn’t around I remember looking at pictures in books and making up the stories on my own. I became a voracious reader over time and dabbled in writing as a kid, but didn’t really think to write anything serious. I was too busy reading and enjoying everyone else’s work. It wasn’t until after I finished university that I had an “Aha” moment and decided to try writing myself. It took a long time to learn the craft, but it was a worthwhile journey.

Barb –  Who are your cheerleaders?  Who keeps you going?

David – My agent was my first cheerleader. That made all the difference for me to know that I should continue writing. She believed staunchly in work. As for my children’s books, my own kids have been a huge boost in addition to some wonderful young readers that I’ve met online that have read my work. I was also lucky enough to meet a grade 5 class in Michigan a few years ago and the kids in that class were hugely encouraging. My beta readers definitely keep me going as well as some fans that I’ve garnered along the way that really enjoy reading my work.

Barb –  Try to describe your book in 20 words or less!

David – Oh goodness! OK, let’s try this:

Two men to choose from, a faery curse to destroy, and three days to live. 🙂

Barb –  What part of the writing process do you love?

David – Believe it or not, editing. I don’t know why, but I just love it! I lot of writers hate it, but I like taking the time to improve what’s written and clean it up.

Barb –  What is your least favorite part of writing?

David – Marketing. I know that’s not actual writing, but I dread marketing the book. I’m not a very good salesman.

Barb –  Do you see yourself in any of your characters?

David – Oh, good question! I have lots of characters that I think have small parts of me. In this particular book, I’d say it’s Katherine’s no-nonsense approach. 🙂 Mostly, though, I try to make each character unique and to stand on their own.

Barb –  What is your favorite scene? Why?

David – Well, I’d have to say it’s the scenes with Brokk. I love that little guy! I want a Brokk of my own!

Barb –  Where did you get your inspiration for this book or in general?

David – This is interesting. It’s based on my own family history. My great-grandfather died at the age of 24 in WWI. He was a Lead Stoker in the Royal Navy. He left behind a pregnant widow.

My grandfather died in WWII, also at the age of 24. He, too, was a Lead Stoker in the Royal Navy, and also left behind a pregnant widow.

I thought to myself that it was really weird that in two successive generations, there was so many similarities – to the point that the battleship my grandfather died on first saw service in the very battle where my great-grandfather died.

Knowing all of that, I thought I would write about it, using a paranormal slant. That’s how Broken was born.

Barb –  What book are your currently reading?

David – I just finished reading David McAfee’s 61 AD, the successor to his bestseller, 33 AD. I’m still deciding on what to read next.

Barb –  Do you have a favorite all time book?

David – Lord of the Rings. I read that thing something like 12 times! 🙂 Love, love, love that book!

Barb –  Where can your fans find you?

David – I have a blog (davidhburton.com), I’m on Facebook (facebook.com/davidhburton), and on Twitter (twitter.com/davidhburton).

Barb –  Where is your work available?

Barb –  Anything else you want to share with us?

David – Only to say thank you very much for the interview!! I really appreciate the opportunity! 🙂

I’d like to thank David for dropping by and sharing with us.  Keep reading and have a look at the blurb for his book!

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, Katherine Gregory receives a letter from her deceased mother. It details a faery curse in which the eldest child in each generation will die in their twenty-fifth year.

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, a new love interest comes knocking, and her first love has returned – neither men are what they seem, and Katherine may have to choose between them.

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, Katherine must decide if this is all real, or if the strange visions she’s been having are just a figment of her imagination.

The race to unravel the mystery begins, and Katherine must solve it – for any day after her birthday could be her last.
