Cowboy Up by Vicki Lewis Thompson

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel!

Welcome to Series Sunday where we celebrate my favorite thing – books written in series!  Today we are continuing with the series we have been discussing for the past few weeks – The Last Chance series by Vicki Lewis Thompson!

Cowboy Up by Vicki Lewis Thompson
ISBN: 978-0-373-79628-1
Publisher: Harlequin Blaze
Release: July 2011
Source: I purchased this book to read and review

Sometimes a girl just needs a stud….

“Never fall in love with a cowboy.” These words were drilled into Emily Sterling’s head since her parents divorced over twenty years ago.  but now Emily has returned to her father’s ranch only to find herslef face-to-face with jaw-droppingly hot rancher Clay Whitaker.

Clay is the resident stud expert at the Last Chance Ranch and isn’t so keen on “spoiled” city slickers…until Emily arrives.  Now he’s showing Emily just what a ranch – and a cowboy – has to offer.  And luckily for him. it’s an offer Emily can’t refuse….

Cowboy Up is yet another book from Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Sons of Chance series.  This has been an excellent set of books by one of my all time favorite authors!  Before we talk about the book, just have a look at that cover!  You can tell this is obviously an excellent book!  How could it be anything but excellent with a yummy man like that on the cover!  Clay Whitaker has lived at Last Chance Ranch for many years.  He was orphaned as a young child and after several foster homes, ended up at the ranch where he has worked as a ranch hand for years.  With the encouragement of Emmett, the head ranch hand, Clay went off to school, but he is now back and in charge of the breeding program at the ranch.

Emmett’s daughter, Emily has visited her dad over the years, but living with her mom, she was convinced that a ranch was an awful place be.  During her younger years, visits to the see her dad were exercises in teasing the ranch hands and being disagreeable.  Years have passed and Emily has come for a holiday and to celebrate her dad’s 60th birthday.  Her first sight upon arrival is a partially naked Clay walking out of the barn.  It’s lust at first sight!

This book had a slightly different feel to it than the others in this series.  Maybe because the hero was one of the ranch hands and not a family member, I’m not sure.  The previous books have filled us in on the history of the various family members and their relationships.  I’m a huge fan of series!  I like following along with the lives of a family as it grows and adds more members!  This book was a wonderful addition to this series.  We learned more about Emmett, the head ranch hand and got a little more information about the couples were have met already.  Since I’ve not read a book by Vicki Lewis Thompson that I haven’t liked, I’m happy to report that this one was no different.  The characters were great!  I loved Clay!  He was a great hero!  I also loved Emily and her development as the story went along.  I especially liked the part where Clay climbs a rope up into Emily’s room in the middle of the night!  Great book!  Great read!

Oh my. If cowboys really looked like that, I’d move to Calgary for sure!
