Miss Fix-It by Olivia Ventura

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel!

Today is day 2 with Olivia Ventura.  Yesterday we had an interview with her and learned alot about her and her writing.  Today is a review of her novel, Miss Fix-it.  This book is well worth picking up….it’s entertaining, well-written and the most important thing, it has a pink hammer in it 🙂  Read on….

Miss Fix It by Olivia Ventura
ISBN: 146095520X
Publisher: Solstice Publishing
Release: Dec 15, 2010
Source: I received a copy of this book from the author to read and review

Veronica, a self confessed girly-girl, often finds herself labeled a bimbo–and just doesn’t care. An ex-economist turned handy-person, Vee is not afraid to be female, period. If it happens to be in a male-dominated industry, well – so what?

When Vee threatens a client with a hammer to ward off his wandering hands, she finds herself at the local police station facing charges of assault. There she meets Detective Cole Samuels, and the sparks thrown off by their mutual animosity soon become combustive. They quickly become involved in a hot and heavy relationship, leaping one hurdle after another, including Cole’s emotionally destitute mother and Vee’s deep-seated fear of being cheated on. Things finally seem to be working out when Vee’s workplace is vandalized, a message left…and suddenly that crank call and the near-miss with the crazy driver don’t seem to be harmless incidents any more. Vee’s stalker rapidly escalates in violence, leaving Cole determined to find him before Vee gets hurt….

Welcome to the world of pink overalls, pink hammers and a handy person who has a standing appointment to have her nails done each week!

Veronica, or Vee is escaping from the world of being an economist and doing what she loves.  Being a handy person is the job that she is meant to have, but she gets alot of grief from the men she runs into to in her line of work.  The books starts with her having a run in with the husband of the woman she is doing some work for.  He gets a little touchy-feely and when she threatens him with her hammer, the cops arrest her.  Her assertive personality, combined with her girly-girly exterior have the cops uncertain as to how to deal with her.  After the complaint is sorted out, Cole Samuels, one of the officers who was dealing with her asks her out.  Their spicy interaction translates into combustion on a date and an almost immediate comfort with one another.  It’s like they’ve always known one another.  Their relationship progresses eery quickly.  Then the troubles start!

I am not the type to shop.  I often say shopping gives me hives!  To me clothes are functional – do they fit, are they durable.  Although on one level, I cringed at all the descriptions of Vee choosing clothes, going shopping with everyone from friends to family members, and getting her hair and nails done, I applaud how well it is done!  It is a testament to how well this character is written when I can cringe at her character, yet still continue with the story and marvel at the writing of it!  The character of Cole was another marvel!  I don’t understand how men deal with girly-girls, yet he does so very well!  He is endlessly patient when many men would give up!  I loved how these two people just clicked despite the rocky start to their relationship.  The are both strong characters, yet deal with one stressful situation after another and continue to communicate effectively!

This is a well-written story, with characters that will appeal to the readers.  The story line moves along at a good pace without being rushed.  I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance!
