Guest Post – In Her Sights by Robin Perini

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Welcome back to my blog!  I hope everyone had a great Christmas and is sitting on the couch trying to recover from too much turkey and cookies…..or maybe it’s just me 🙂

Today we are welcoming Robin Perini, author of In Her Sights to the blog. She’s taking part in a mini blog tour put on by her publisher, Tribute books, to promote her book.  Sit back and enjoy what she has to share with us!

Hi there. Thanks so much for having me at Sugarbeat’s Books. It’s the day after Christmas, which means a week until New Year’s. Until New Year’s resolutions. Which got me reflecting on what an absolutely blessed and amazing year 2011 has been for me.

In January, I received a rejection on a novel that was near and dear to my heart. In Her Sights. I had always loved my heroine, Jasmine “Jazz” Parker. This female SWAT Team sniper has a lot to prove and even more to hide. She faces her greatest fears and gets more than she ever believed she deserved. Still, I faced another rejection.

Then, my amazing agent, Jill Marsal, from Marsal Lyon Literary Agency, suggested a new possibility—Montlake Romance. It didn’t even have a name then. I wanted Jazz’s story to get out there, so I agreed we should submit the book. In February, I received the call. I had sold In Her Sights to Montlake, and it would be one of the first books they published.

Amazing. Stupendous. A dream come true.

But the good news didn’t stop there, because I hadn’t stopped writing. Within the next few months, I sold three more books—this time to Harlequin Intrigue. I went from a rejection and taking a dive into a bowl of M&Ms, to selling four books after writing for years. I won the prestigious Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® award for what would become my first Harlequin Intrigue novel, Finding Her Son (aka Stolen Lullaby). In Her Sights was also up for the award, and ironically enough, received higher first-round scores than the eventual winner.

I started looking back on what had changed. Why now, after so long had my dreams come true? Then I realized that while I had spent numerous years learning the craft and preparing myself, I did one thing in previous eighteen months before I sold. I really looked at my priorities. I realized I had to make choices if I wanted to have a career as a writer. One very difficult choice was to cut back on teaching writing classes. I love teaching, I love sharing my passion for the craft of writing, but teaching now comes second to writing. I also looked at my life and determined when I could write so that my production was consistent and predictable, but also how to integrate it where I still had time for the important people in my life. Lastly, I took some advice from my grandmothers. One of them told me, after reading my first book, that I had a gift.  Just so you know, this manuscript will never see the light of day, but she believed in me, and I will be forever grateful. My other grandmother told me that if I wanted to write badly enough, all I had to do was give it all my heart and soul and strength, and I would succeed.

You may not be a writer, but those lessons work for anything you do in life. My grandmothers were right. Listen to them.

In Her Sights Book Summary

Jasmine “Jazz” Parker, Jefferson County SWAT’s only female sniper, can thread the eye of a needle with a bullet. But she carries a secret from her past that she thought she buried for good at the age of fifteen. Two years ago she even drove away the one man she believed she could love—ex-Army Ranger turned reporter Luke Montgomery—to keep her past hidden. Now, in a fleeting second, the time it takes for one clean shot, one perfect hit, to save the life of the governor’s daughter, Jazz’s world begins to crumble around her.Luke splashes her face and name across the front page of the newspaper, reawakening her past with a vengeance. A vicious enemy is now bent on destroying her life, forcing Jazz to turn to the one man she can never have in order to stop a killer before she and everyone she cares about pays the ultimate price. Full of explosive action and almost unbearable suspense, In Her Sights is a relentless, steamy thriller surprisingly infused with soul and poignancy.

Thanks SO much for having me today. As we speak, I am sitting in a cabin, looking out over fogging, rolling hills with my family surrounding me. A true blessing!

BUT…I’m also going to steal away and write for a few hours…the next book awaits!

I’d love to hear about your goals and dreams. Anything special in the wings this year?

For me, I’ll continue writing, maybe create some new stories…and spend some fun time with my family. This year, I want to really remember the important things and act on those. And try not to sweat the small stuff.

What do you have on tap this year?

Can’t wait to hear from you.
All my best and keep your dreams in your sights!
    Robin

Thanks, Barb! I had a great time writing it. I love Jazz. She’s really an amazing person. I like how she pushed through the hard times. She isn’t without scars, but she really fought hard and became an amazing person even if she doesn’t know how amazing she really is. Hope you enjoy her story when you get the chance to read it.

Congrats on all the successes you’ve enjoyed this year! Your book sounds great. As for the upcoming year, I’m learning how to enjoy things more and worry a little bit less. 🙂 I think I should get the hang of it in another decade or so!
