Love Letters From a Duke by Elizabeth Boyle

By Barb Drozdowich Leave a Comment

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel!

So…..it started with a visit to the book fair at the Emerald City RWA conference.  I decided to pick up a book from Elizabeth Boyle and get it signed, so that I could give it away to one of you guys! Oh, and read it before I gave it away so that I could share my thoughts.  The book I picked up was Lord Langely is Back in Town.  I’ll share my thoughts about it in a few weeks, but I had the opportunity to have a short chat with Ms. Boyle about romance novel models in puffy shirts vs leather vests (puffy shirts win btw).  When I got home, I raced through it, reminding myself of how much I enjoy Elizabeth Boyle’s books, and how long it had been since I had read one. I got busy and gathered up a selection of the previous books, and started to read and review.

Today we are starting with Love Letters From a Duke, not the beginning, but one of my favorites of this series. This book lays a good grounding of the characters and the history involved in this series.  And yes, I have a bunch of Elizabeth Boyle books to giveaway when I’m done with my reviews.  Oh yes, I also read and reviewed these books out of order 🙂 I hope you enjoy my thoughts about this great book!

sugarbeat's books romance books romance novel reviews historical contemporary eroticaThough she can’t afford the coal to heat her drafty Mayfair mansion, Felicity Langley still clings to her dream of marrying a duke–one she’s had since her very first curtsy. After all, she’s been all but promised to the very proper and very lofty Duke of Hollindrake for the last four years. Now all she has to do is meet him. But what Felicity doesn’t realize is that she has already met her duke—he’s the rather unfashionable yet altogether too-handsome man who has just turned up at her doorstep. And Felicity has just mistaken him…for her new footman!
By rights, Thatcher should immediately set this presumptuous chit straight and tell her he has no intention of following through with a betrothal his grandfather—the previous duke—arranged. But he’s quickly smitten by Felicity’s delightful determination, her irrepressible charm…and her breathtaking beauty. Yes, she’d wed him in an instant were his true identity revealed—but Thatcher’s vowed to marry only for love. So begins his deception and his conquest of this uncommon woman who doesn’t believe in romance, but is about to find her heart and passions set aflame by the unlikely servant she’s sworn to resist.

Yet another excellent novel by Elizabeth Boyle! This is a book in the Bachelor Chronicle series and this one features Felicity Langley and the Duke of Hollindrake. Felicity is the creator of The Bachelor Chronicles, a notebook with information on all the eligible men in society. This is a project that Felicity started while at school, and it is a work in progress as it were. She has determined that she is going to marry the Duke of Hollindrake, and thinks she has been corresponding with him for years. She has, in fact, been corresponding with his grandfather, as he has been off serving his country. She has become more and more certain as the years have passed, and the correspondence has continued that she wants to marry her duke.

Thatcher, the new Duke of Hollindrake, returns to England after the death of his grandfather to find out he is engaged to Felicity Langley. Intent on dissolving this sham engagement, he shows up at her door, only to be mistaken for an applicant for a footman. He’s not certain whether to be annoyed or intrigued, but he takes the position and starts an illustrious career as a footman to the most doggedly determined woman he has ever met.

I don’t want to give away much, if anything of this story, because it is totally delightful from beginning to end! Thatcher is a wonderful character, that is totally deserving of the role of hero. Felicity, as I’ve already said, is determined, but really, she would put a bull-dog to shame! She is determined to marry a duke – specifically the Duke of Hollindrake. In order to meet him, she has acquired a house, but has no staff, no money and no appropriate clothes, but she marches forward, braving her way though all obstacles.

This book is filled with action, humor, and delightful characters. It grabs hold of you and makes you finish reading it, even if you have to read into the wee hours to do so! Pick up a copy of this book, and enjoy a rollicking good read!!

But she’s managing quite well as a governess to three highborn young ladies. Her job can be a challenge— in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play that might be a tragedy (or might be a comedy— no one is sure), and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. After years of dodging unwanted advances, he’s the first man who has truly tempted her, and it’s getting harder and harder to remind herself that a governess has no business flirting with a nobleman.

Daniel Smythe-Smith Might be in mortal danger…

But that’s not going to stop the young earl from falling in love. And when he spies a mysterious woman at his family’s annual musicale, he vows to pursue her, even if that means spending his days with a ten-year-old who thinks she’s a unicorn. But Daniel has an enemy, one who has vowed to see him dead. And when Anne is thrown into peril, he will stop at nothing to ensure their happy ending…

The fourth book in the Hurst Amulet Series

A DAUNTLESS PRINCESS

Once her clan’s princess, Jane fled Barra years ago to avoid a forced marriage. Since then, she has made her living as efficient Miss Smythe-Haughton—the perfect (and highly paid) assistant. Now she must confront her secrets . . . including her feelings for her irascible employer, too-handsome-for-his-own-good Michael Hurst.

A PERILOUS PLEASURE

Others are also searching for the missing amulet, however. Can Jane and Michael learn to trust each other in time to solve two riddles: the location of the Hurst Amulet, and the meaning of the vivid passion flaring between them?

What I did with my Saturday…..

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel!

So….the question is…..what did I do with my Saturday???

No, I didn’t actually go to the Writer’s Conference, but I went to the book fair part of the conference.  This is something that I’ve never done!  As I’m driving to Bellevue, WA on beautiful sunny day, I was wondering if I’d lost my mind.  I’m a quiet, relatively shy person who is happy to sit in my comfy chair and read books by my favorite authors – and find some new-to-me authors.  I’ve never actually met any of my favorite authors in person!  I’ve never gone to a book signing.

Not sure what I was expecting, but this event was huge!  I got there early and spent some time outside the ballroom where the signings were to occur.  It was fascinating to watch the people, some standing and chatting, some, like me, simply waiting for the doors to open and the event to start.  Some of the people waiting were readers – huge fans of some of the authors inside, waiting to get books that they brought with them signed. (some were carrying shopping bags full!) Some were conference attendees waiting their turn to wander through.  Looking at nametags, I was able to match some names with some faces.  I was reminded again, how anonymous blogging and twitter is.  I saw several twtter “friends” wander by, with me too shy to walk up and say hi.

The doors opened and we were admitted to the motherlode of authors, books and swag!

The first person I ran into was Ann Charles, author of quite a few books including, Nearly Departed in Deadwood and her newest book, Dance of the Winnebagos.  I know about her and her books through the Indie Book Collective, but have never met her in person.  She gave me some swag for a future giveaway, so stay tuned!

I then found Amber Scott, author of Soul Search, Play Fling, Fierce Dawn, Irish Moon, Wanted and others.  Like Ann, I’ve “talked” to Amber through e-mail as she is also part of the IBC, but it was delightful to meet her in person!  She has also give me some swag for a future giveaway!  I also had the opportunity to talk to Jacquie Rogers, author of several books including Much Ado About Marshals (which is currently on my TBR pile).  I had the opportunity to meet Minnette Meador, who has appeared on this blog several times through Goddessfish Promotions.

Her books always have such yummy men on the covers!  She is just as kind and gracious in person as she has been on my blog.  I was so happy to be able to have a few words with her!

I then when shopping for some more books and some presents.  All the while trying to figure out how I was going to sneak everything back into the house without DH noticing….

I got a copy of Lord Langley is Back in Town autographed by Elizabeth Boyle.  What a yummy cover to this book!  We had a brief discussion about the lovely men on the cover of romance novels and the merits of the “puffy shirt” vs. simply a leather vest.  I’ve added this book to my TBR pile and hopefully I’ll post a review and giveaway early in the new year.

I picked up an autographed copy of Tempting A Proper Lady by Debra Mullins.  I enjoyed being able to have a few words with Ms. Mullins.  I haven’t read any of her books in a while, and I’m looking forward to reading this new book that I’ve picked up!

I had the great honor of meeting Julia Quinn – one of my all time favorite authors!  I’ve read and reviewed all of the Bridgerton series as well as several of her newer books!  I was able to get an autographed copy of Just Like Heaven.  This is her latest book that I suppose is sort of part of the Bridgerton series as it features the Smythe-Smiths.  You will remember them if you have read any of the Bridgerton series!

What an amazing experience!  I truly enjoyed the honor of walking around a room full of such talent and meeting some amazing storytellers!  This event will be on my calendar for next year and I encourage all in the area to drop by and support these authors!
