BLURB:

sugarbeat's books romance books romance novel reviews historical contemporary eroticaPiper McGee can smell a set up a mile away. She can smell a Marine even further. Born to a dual-enlisted couple who divorced before she was old enough to remember a single family holiday together and proceeded to redefine the very definition of family through several marriages and even more step-siblings, Piper has made it her life’s promise to herself to never become involved with one of the few and the proud. They’re among the most irresponsible people she knows, leaving destruction in their wake and broken hearts paving the way to their next duty station. And in her opinion, Alec Douglas is just another example, until he pries her heart open along with other parts of her, making her question everything she’s ever let herself believe about honor, courage, and commitment.

What does a man do with six month’s down time and no warm body to share his bed? For Sergeant Alec Douglas, contemplating that question led him to fall prey to his two best friend’s plan to find him that very thing. They know Alec has yet to stay with any one person for more than a few dates. They also know a tragedy from his past created the problem and while that haunts him, making it nearly impossible for Alec to trust his heart to anyone, they also know he’s a sucker for a challenge. Will the enticement of a few thousand dollars riding on him breaking his own rule be just the thing to disrupt his cycle? Taking their bet might be profitable, but is winning the money they’ve dangled under Alec’s nose worth losing himself to the girl they’ve picked out for him?

In his quest to get her to say yes to his crazy proposal, he tracks her all over town only to discover the beautiful, long-legged blond isn’t the studious book worm he mistook her for. In fact, she’s one of Jacksonville’s finest in the form of Orchid, exotic dancer. Her rejection only spurs him to make sure her dancing days are over and she only performs her private pirouette for him, and only him, for the rest of their lives if he has his way.

EXCERPT

Piper opened her car door and started to get in. “Get off my hood.”

“Wait, wait. What if there was a way to make some easy extra cash?” He raised one hand and blinked a few times. “I have a business proposition of sorts for you…” He took two steps toward her and three back, landing on the hood again.

“What? Are you crazy? I don’t do that on the side you perv.”

“No, no. Not that…geeze. The reason I’m persistent is a few thousand dollars rides on if I can get you to date me for six months.” Leaning on his palms, he gave her a crooked smile of triumph as though he was proud he’d remembered why he was there considering his current condition.

“What?” Piper slammed the door and walked back over to him with her arms crossed under her breasts. “So, you don’t actually want me, this is about money?”

“Well, now, don’t get all huffy.  As a matter of fact, I do think you’re hhhooot.  Especially now that I seen all your stuff in…there.” He waved one hand toward the back of the club, a ridiculous grin crossing his face. “But, if don’t want to really date, fine.  We can pretend and still split the money.  You said yourself you need it.”

Piper didn’t like the fact he’d intended to use her all along.  But she wasn’t stupid either.  Several hundred dollars would go a long way in getting her moved and all she had to do was pretend to date this jerk.

“Do you have a name?” It seemed in order to pull off this ruse she at least needed to know who she was in cahoots with.

In The Line of Fire by Jennifer LaBrecque

By Barb Drozdowich

ISBN: 9780373796021
Publisher: Harlequin Blaze
Release: Mar 2011
Source: I purchased this book to read and review

Colton respects one creed: Duty and honor above all. So he’s torn when sweet, sexy Andi asks his help in fleeing from her intended groom. But her big, brown-eyed plea is so convincing…

Unfortunately, Andi is his best friend’s little sister. Translation? Hands off, soldier! But that’s a damn hard thing to do. Because this sexy, utterly absorbing woman is the only one he wants—the one he’s always wanted. How can he possibly resist her when they’re sharing hotel rooms…and their bodies?

Battle zones are nothing compared to this. Colton’s heart is directly in the line of fire. So what else can he do but launch a counterattack…a purely physical one? Because if you can’t beat ’em…

Colton grew up next door to Andi and her brother Rion and now serves in the army with Rion. When Rion’s leave to give his sister away at her wedding falls through, he turns to Colton to take his place. Andi is the only woman Colton has loved. He’s not too happy about giving her away to another man, so when he sees her trying to escape out of a bathroom window at the church, he’s more than happy to serve as her get-away-driver!

Andi comes to the conclusion, just minutes before walking down the aisle, that she doesn’t love her fiancee, Blanton, and can’t possibly envision a life with him. She does the only thing she can think of – escape. Who better to escape with than the man she has decided she actually loves?

This is a great little book! The characters are well crafted! Colton is desperate to do what’s honorable, but Andi keeps pushing him further than he can resist. The families that these two come from are well developed, and add both humor as well as depth to the story. The whole host of seconday characters are amazing. They have the reader, laughing, cheering, shedding a tear, and finally sighing in delight.

I’ve often said that I enjoy getting my subscription to Blaze every month. They are short, spicy little stories that pop in my purse and keep me entertained for a few hours. They range from good to outstanding, but at the price, they serve as great mind candy!

This book serves as my entry for the Men In Uniform challenge for this month.

Men In Uniform Reading Challenge 2011

By Barb Drozdowich

As I’m trying to organize the many reading challenges I’m signing up for, I discovered that although I signed up for the Men In Uniform reading challenge, I didn’t put together a post, so here it is.  By the way, I’m going to try to achieve a sargeant level which is 1-5 books.  I hope that I’ll overtake this…..

Here are the rules:

Details:

  • Runs January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011(books read prior to 1/1/11 do not count towards the challenge). You can join at anytime – Sign up on The Book Vixen’s blog.
  • The goal is to read as many novels that involve men in inform as you’d like. It can be a policeman, firefighter, paramedic, Army, Navy, Marine Corp., etc. – As long as the leading man wears some sort of uniform, it counts. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. Nothing is set in stone; you can change levels at any time during the challenge.
  • Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine.
  • You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them. It is not required that you review the books you read for this challenge but feel free to do so.
  • Post this reading challenge on your blog so you can keep a list of the books you’ve read for this challenge. Please include a link back to this post so readers can join the challenge too.
  • You do not have to be a book blogger to participate. You can keep tabs on books you’ve read for this challenge on Goodreads or LibraryThing if you’d like (maybe make a shelf for “Men in Uniform Reading Challenge”). If you are not on either of those sites then you can list the books you read for this challenge in the comments on my wrap-up post, which will be up at the end of 2011.

Levels:

Sergeant – Read 1–5 men in uniform novels
Lieutenant – Read 6–10 men in uniform novels
Captain – Read 11–15 men in uniform novels
