Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel
Today I’m reviewing a book that I found out about through Barnes & Noble’s Pubit event that was held back in the summer. Self-pubbed authors could pitch their books to a small collection of bloggers in hopes of getting some more attention for their books. I’ve been quite a busy beaver with the authors that I met through this Pubit event. So many books, so little time! I’ve been enjoying the books that I have read and hope that my posts will get these authors some much deserved recognition! Make sure you pop back tomorrow to read an interview with Leslie and find out more about her books!

YOU CAN’T PICK YOUR FAMILY…
Death by Chocolate is her favorite dessert. And those knitting needles aren’t just for craft projects. To most people, Gin Bombay is an ordinary single mom. Then again, they don’t know she’s from a family of top secret assassins. Somewhere between leading a Girl Scout troop for her kindergartner–would nooses count for a knot badge?–and keeping their puppy from destroying the furniture, Gin now has to take out a new target.BUT YOU CAN PICK THEM OFF?Except this target has an incredibly hot Australian bodyguard who knows just how to make her weak in the knees. But with a mole threatening to expose everything, Gin doesn’t have much time to let her hormones do the happy dance. She’s got to find the leak and clear her assignment…or she’ll end up next on the Bombay family hit list.
Gin Bombay comes from a family of assassins. As is pointed out on the first page, this makes going to family reunions a whole different thing! Gin is short for Virginia – it seems that it is tradition in the Bombay family to name the kids after places. She has a mother named Carolina, a brother named Dakota and a cousin named Liv (short for Liverpool) The story starts with Gin getting an invitation to a family reunion on the private island the family owns. Since family reunions are mandatory events (you are killed if you don’t attend) and they are normally held every 4 years, but it’s only been 1 year since the last, everyone is nervous. In the meantime, Gin has gotten an envelope with details for her next assassination and she needs to use the time to study “Vic” while her daughter is at school to plan the hit. To add to her already full plate, she meets a hot Australian bodyguard who she starts to date.
Such is the life of a widowed mother of a soon-to-be 5 year old assassin in training! This book rocks and rolls along. It had me laughing in disbelief from the very first page. I have never read a book that is written in such a tongue in cheek manner. To say it is funny is an understatement! The dry humor catches the reader unawares. I found myself stopping and re-reading to make sure that the author really did say what was written.
The story moves fast, taking the reader for a ride that is totally enjoyable. The various characters are great. Everything about them is original from their names to the various odd hobbies. This story is written from the point of view of Gin and so everyone is described through her eyes. This adds an interesting snarkiness to her description of some of her family members!
Not only is this book funny, but it is also part mystery and part romance. A little something for everyone. Although this book is quite different from my usual Regency romances, I totally enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to everyone! Leslie has several other books that should be added to everyone’s TBR pile or wish list – Christmas is coming!
This book is currently priced at 99 cents – pick up a copy and experience this author! Don’t forget to drop back by tomorrow and find out more about this author!
