Sugarbeat's Books Romance Novel romance book reviews interviews guests historical series sunday contemporary eroticaWhen a charming rogue proposes she marry him to meet her grandmother’s ultimatum, the Sharpe clan’s strong-willed sister makes a tempting counter-offer that preserves her inheritance and ignites his imagination.
Lady Minerva Sharpe has the perfect plan to thwart her grandmother’s demands: become engaged to a rogue! Surely Gran would rather release her inheritance than see her wed a scoundrel. And who better to play the part of Minerva’s would-be husband than wild barrister Giles Masters, the very inspiration for the handsome spy in the popular Gothic novels she writes? The memory of his passionate kiss on her nineteenth birthday has lingered in Minerva’s imagination, though she has no intention of really falling for such a rakehell, much less marrying him. Little does she know, he really is a covert government operative. When they team up to investigate the mystery behind her parents’ deaths, their fake betrothal leads to red-hot desire. Then Minerva discovers Giles’s secret double life, and he must use all the cunning tricks of his trade to find his way back into her heart.
What happens when you take a strong-willed, on the shelf, gothic romance writer and a barrister that is actually a spy for the goverment? You get the latest hair-raising ride in the “Hellions of Halstead Hall” series! Get set for fast action, incredibly sensuality, and a clash of strong-willed characters destined to be together.

Welcome to the world of Sabrina Jeffries’ latest series about the Hellions of Halstead Hall!  These “Hellions” are the strong willed Sharpe children. There are 5 of them, Oliver, Jarret, Minerva, Gabe and Celia. They were orphaned many years ago when both of their parents died. Some say it was a murder-suicide, but Hetty Plumtree, their maternal grandmother did whatever she could to quiet the scandal hide the true details, and took the 5 children away to live with her. She was a working class woman who’s family owns and runs a brewery. She had arranged for her only daughter to marry a title, a decision that, in hindsight, she heartily regrets! She is now getting older and having some health problems and is determined to hold some great-grandchildren before she dies. Since none of her grandchildren seem to be willing to settle down and marry, she makes an ultimatum. If they don’t all marry within the year, none of them will inherit her money.

Here we are at book three already! These Sharpe “children” are a strong willed lot! We have had a chance to look at Oliver and Jarrett’s attempts to foil their grandmother, now it is Minerva’s turn. Minerva has had a lifelong attraction to Giles Masters, one of her brothers’ friends. After one unfortunate encounter several years ago, she has decided that he can go to the devil. When she starts writing torrid gothic romances, she models her villian after Giles!

When Giles finds out that Minerva has published an advertisement for a husband in a popular lady’s magazine, he decides that enough is enough. No other man is going to have Minerva and he heads over to to Halstead Hall to interview for the position of “husband”. Minerva has decided that if she creates enough of a scandal around her Grandmother forcing her to marry, the old woman will back off. What better way to get a rise out of her grandmother than advertising for a husband and have crowds of men appear wanting to interview for the position. She doesn’t count on Giles appearing, but after some thought decides that a pretend engagement is just the thing to piss of her grandmother and both her brothers!

“Over my dead body!”

Hetty heard Oliver’s roar from two halls over and hurried toward it as fast as her cane could take her. He must have found Minerva. Damned girl. Why couldn’t she just marry some decent fellow and be done with it? Why did she have to drum up this nonsense about interviewing fools she solicited in the papers like a common whore?

Well, Oliver would put an end to that-he wouldn’t want Minerva marrying some stranger either, thank God.

She followed the sound of heated voices into the Chinese drawing room, then stopped short. Oliver was squared off against that rogue Giles Masters-God only knew when he had snuck in. And Minerva stood with her hand tucked in the crook of Giles’s elbow.

“What has happened?” Hetty demanded.

Oliver shot her an angry glance. “Masters has some idiotic idea that he’s going to marry Minerva.”

Hetty dragged in a breath. Masters? With her granddaughter? Never. ……

Minerva shot Hetty a sly glance. “You gave no rules for whom we could marry, Gram, just when we had to marry”

Sabrina Jeffries has the ability to create characters so real that they leap off the pages of her books! You cheer for them, boo at them, and encourage them along. Time passes, and you are oblivious, because you are wound up in the story. The historical details that she throws in adds depth to the story that is being woven around these characters. She provides just enough history of what has gone on in previous stories to keep the thread of the characters going, yet each book could easily be read as a stand-alone. In this particular series, I just love the character of Hetty. She’s had a hard life. She’s made bad decisions. But she lives life to it’s fullest, trying not to dwell on her mistakes. She’s determined to be the strong woman that she is and not show weakness in front of her grandchildren.

We are given more details of the Sharpe parents’ deaths – some questions are answered, but we still don’t know what happened yet. I think that we meet Gabe’s “nemesis” and are given a glimpse into a possible attraction for Celia. According to Ms. Jeffries’ website, the next book is called To Wed A Wild Lord

For those of you uninitiated into the world of the Hellions of Halstead Hall, you need to pick up the previous two books and find a comfy chair and hang on for the ride!

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Welcome also to Series Sunday!

This is one of my most favorite days of the week – the day I get to talk about the latest series I’ve been reading! Since I’m currently reading the last of The Hellions of Halstead Hall series by Sabrina Jeffries, I’ve decided to repost the reviews that I’ve already posted, and then introduce you all to the newest and last book in the series.

Last week I started the series with my review for the first book in the series, The Truth About Lord Stoneville.  If this series is new to you, please click back and find out what I had to say about that book.  To give you a brief overview, this is a series about 5 siblings that lose their parents at an early age and are raised by their maternal grandmother, Hetty Plumtree.  She is getting older, and has given an ultimatum to her grandchildren – marry within the year or they all are written out of her will.  Enjoy!

Furious at his grandmother’s ultimatum to marry or lose his inheritance, Lord Jarret Sharpe wagers his luck—and his heart—at the card table against a most unlikely opponent. Mired in scandal after his parents’ mysterious deaths, notorious gambler Lord Jarret Sharpe agrees to tamely run the family’s brewery for a year if his Machiavellian grandmother rescinds her ultimatum that he marry. But the gambler in him can’t resist when beguiling Annabel Lake proposes a wager. If she wins their card game, he must help save her family’s foundering brewery. But if he wins, she must spend a night in his bed. The outcome sets off a chain of events that threatens to destroy all his plans…and unveils the secret Annabel has held for so long. When Jarret discovers the darker reason behind her wager, he forces her into another one—and this time he intends to win not just her body, but her heart.

A Hellion in Her Bed is the second book in Sabrina Jeffries’ latest series called “The Hellions of Halstead Hall”. This book is about the second son of 5 children, Lord Jarret Sharpe. The Sharpe children were orphaned when their parents died some 20 years before the timing of the book. When their parents died, they were taken in by their maternal grandmother, Hetty Plumtree. Hetty is a working class woman who runs the family brewery. Jarret and his older brother Oliver are sent away to school at Eton where they stay in Halstead Hall. Jarret discovers that he has a knack for gambling and that is how he manages to survive in the rough and tumble world of boarding school! He finds he isn’t cut out to be a barrister like his grandmother would like, but he manages to keep himself afloat by gambling.

Our series starts when Hetty, sick of watching her grandchildren run amuck and wanting great grandchildren makes an ultimatum. All 5 siblings must marry in the next year or none of them will inherit her money. Oliver marries in the first book, The Truth About Lord Stoneville. Jarret manages to make a deal with his ailing grandmother to be exempt from her demands if he agrees to manage the family brewery for the next year.

Annabel Lake is a woman with a secret and a mission. She is desperate to keep her family’s small brewery afloat despite the fact that her brother spends all his days drinking himself into oblivion. She, her sister-in-law and her nephew travel to London hoping to speak to Hetty Plumtree about a deal to mark their beer to East India company ship captains. Something that she feels would benefit both companies. To her dismay, she finds herself having to speak to Jarret instead of his grandmother. Not trusting that he will talk to his grandmother about their conversation, she finds herself following Jarret and ultimately gambling with him to get her way and winning. This sets of a chain of events that I’ll leave you to read.

In this book the deaths of the Sharpe children’s parents are investigated further and we learn more about what may have happened. Jarret is such a wonderful character! A gambler, but ultimately a gentleman. He is well written and an interesting character to cheer for. Annabel is one of my favorite heroines! She is small but spunky! She has secrets that she is desperate to keep hidden, a family to protect and a family business to run. She has her head on straight and she is a wonderful partner for Jarret! The chemistry between Jarret and Annabel is almost immediate and it sizzles. The way they dance around each other is so well written it was almost impossible to put down!

We also learn more about Hetty, the grandmother. She has lived a hard life and doesn’t apologize for decisions that she has had to make. She is quite the character! The sparks fly between Hetty and Jarret – so interesting to read about their interactions! I am looking forward to reading about Minerva’s story and finding out more about the parent’s deaths.
I hoped you enjoyed my thoughts about book 2 in this series and will come back next week for book 3!

The Truth of Lord Stoneville by Sabrina Jeffries

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel!

sugarbeat's books romance novels romance book reviewsWelcome also to Series Sunday – the day of the week where we look at a series of books that I’m reading.  Today we are revisiting a series that is just ending.

Don’t we wish that our favorite authors could write faster?

The Hellions of Halstead Hall is Sabrina Jeffries latest series.  The first book was published in January of 2010 and I’ve just gotten a copy of the last book of this series.  I thought I’d repost the reviews that I’ve already posted, and talk about this series as a group.

The Hellions are a collection of 5 siblings who lost both their parents to what was assumed to be a murder/suicide, but as we work through the books, we find out more about this.  The siblings are raised by their maternal grandmother, Hetty Plumtree, a no nonsense woman who owns a brewery.  The series starts with the story of Oliver, the Marquess of Stoneville.

The oldest of the scandalous Sharpes—five hell-raising siblings tainted still by the gossip surrounding the “accidental” deaths of their parents two decades ago-—Oliver Sharpe, the Marquess of Stoneville, like his brothers and sisters, has lived life on his own terms. In his case, as an unrepentant rakehell. Or so life had played out until Grandmother Hetty got a bee in her bonnet. Now the five Sharpe siblings face a daunting ultimatum: Marry by year’s end—or kiss their inheritance good-bye.

Oliver vows to fulfill the bargain in true Sharpe style—by bringing home a fake fiancé from a brothel! But his scheme backfires when he foils a robbery and rescues an American beauty instead. Maria Butterfield came to London to find her missing fiancé, but her prior engagement won’t stop Oliver from getting what he wants: Maria in his bed. His rebellious charade may just call Hetty’s bluff, but not before it become all too real—stirring up a love that tempts him to be a hellion no more.

The Truth About Lord Stoneville is the first book in Sabrina Jeffries’ latest series of books. Being a long time fan of Sabrina Jeffries, I snapped up the first book when it hit the shelves and sat and read it in one (long) afternoon!

Sabrina Jeffries fans may recognize that Lord Stoneville is a character from the School of Heiress series. (Ms. Jeffries talks about how many requests she got to write Lord Stoneville’s story in an interview I’ve read)

Oliver Sharpe, the Marquess of Stoneville is the eldest of 5 siblings who lost their parents early. He and his siblings are raised by their grandmother, Hetty Plumtree. It is now 20 years after the day that the parents died. The death was the great scandal of the time, but the actual details of the day their parents died seems to be somewhat of a question. Oliver, as the eldest, bore much of the scandal. He was sent away to boarding school – and we readers of historical romances know how nasty boys at boarding school can be!

Oliver’s grandmother, Hetty, is tired of waiting for her grandchildren to marry and has decided to issue an ultimatum: If they don’t all marry by the time she dies, none of them will see any of her money. Oliver decides to teach his grandmother a lesson in meddling by choosing his bride from a brothel! He has no real interest in actually getting married as he has learned from the horrible example his parents set.

Maria Butterfield is an American who has come to England to track down her missing fiance. She has a run in with Oliver at a whorehouse and decides to take him up on his offer: his help finding her missing fiance for posing as his wife to be. Really, how hard could it be??

The resulting story is hilarious at times, heart wrenching at times, and overall an excellent read!
The character of Maria’s cousin Freddy is wonderfully written. He is so wanting to be a protector. I can see him like a little puffed up robin trying to protect his chick! He would just blurt out whatever was on his mind. So funny! The various parts that dealt with Oliver’s parents’ deaths were absolutely painful. I found myself hurting for that little boy left in that situation, and cheering for him to recover under the ministrations of Maria.

Although I haven’t met a Sabrina Jeffries book I don’t like, I really enjoyed reading this first look at the Hellions of Halstead Hall series. The characters, whether likable or not so likable are well written and well developed. The love scenes steam my glasses, and I find myself lost in another world a mere few pages after beginning. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Cruise over to Sabrina Jeffries’ website to read more on this series of books and come back next week for the next book in the series!
