Welcome also to Series Sunday!

We all know that I love books in series!!  Regency romances in series are even better!  Lately we’ve been working our way through the Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn.  This week is book 3 in the series and my personal favorite.  I hope you enjoy my thoughts on this review and enjoy reviewing this series in anticipation of the new release at the end of May.  Anyone know how many days away that is???

Will she accept his offer before the clock strikes midnight?

Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball—or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.

Who was that extraordinary woman? Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love? ****

An Offer From A Gentleman is the third book in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series. This book explores the relationship between Benedict Bridgerton (the second born) and Sophie Beckett, an illegitimate daughter of an earl.

At the annual Bridgerton’s masquerade ball Benedict – the second of the Bridgerton siblings – falls in love with a beautiful masked woman who suddenly disappears around midnight in true Cinderella fashion. Benedict searches unsuccessfully for years for the masked woman he fell in love with. One night he rescues Sophie Beckett and starts to fall in love with her.

Sophie is the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Penwood. She is left in the care of Araminta, her “stepmother” when her father dies. Like the storybook Cinderella, Sophie becomes the unpaid servant of the family. One evening the other household servants decide to dress her up and send her to the Bridgerton masquerade ball as a treat. The aftermath of this ball are horrible for Sophie. She is turned out of her own home without anywhere to live and no job to support herself. She lands on her feet, however, and runs into Benedict again years later while trying to fend off the lecherous attentions of the son of her latest employer. (all good Regency Romances have to have a lecher!) After Sophie nurses Benedict back to health from a bad cold, he takes Sophie home to find a position in his family home not realizing that she is his fantasy woman from so many years ago. There is something about Sophie that brings out the best in Benedict. He finds himself drawn to her as he was to his mystery woman from years ago. Lady Bridgerton, being the astute mother that she is, sees the chemistry between Sophie and her son. Always trying to marry her children off, she tries to determine if Sophie would make a good daughter-in-law. Benedict seems to struggle with the class difference between Sophie and himself. When Benedict suggests making Sophie his mistress she shows her backbone and stands up for what she believes is right.

Julia Quinn does a wonderful job of taking this story from such a prickly situation to a wonderful ending. In the end, Love Conquers All, and we end our story with a two Kleenex ending. Julia Quinn not only provides us with a whole host of roll-on-the-ground laughing interactions between the Bridgerton siblings, but a masterful weaving of a true love story between the members of different classes in Regency England.

RT Book Reviews gives An Offer from A Gentleman 4 stars and says the following: “With her trademark style, witty repartee, humorous antics and delightful cast of characters, Julia Quinn has penned another winner in this enchanting Cinderella love story.”

Review & Giveaway – The Virtuoso by Grace Burrowes

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Today I’m posting a review of the 4th book in Grace Burrowes’ latest series – The Virtuoso.  For those of you that are following this series, this book is about Val – the musical brother of the Windham family.  The third book – Lady Sophie’s Christmas Wish will post on the 18th.

I’m giving away my copy of this book to one lucky person who fills out the form below.  Because I have to mail this book, Canadian and US entries only please!

Virtuoso by Grace Burrowes
ISBN: 978-1-4022-4570-1
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Release: November 2011
Source: I received a copy of this book to read and review from the publisher

A Man Whose Passion has Failed him…
Lord Valentine Windham is devastated when an injury makes it impossible for him to play the piano.  Val’s music was his greatest expression and  also his salvation from the pressures of society – and of this imperious father.  Grief, loss, and loneliness threaten to overwhelm him, until he meets a beautiful young widow whose troubles are even deeper than his own…

Immerse yourself in the earthy, passionate Regency world of Grace Burrowes where love and sensuality come vibrantly to life in a timelessly graceful era….

Virtuoso is the fourth in a series of books by Grace Burrowes.  The Windham family is featured in this ongoing series, and is proving to be delightful;  each book very different than the previous!

Lord Valentine Windham is the youngest son of the Duke and Duchess of Moreland.  He is part of a collection of 10 siblings but has never felt as if he belongs.  He has always had an affinity for music in general and the piano in particular.  It is his life – it is his identity.  His world is shattered when the family doctor tells him he can’t play the piano until the swelling in his hand goes away – it may be months.  There seems to be no clear cause for the swelling and therefore it isn’t known what will resolve the issue; maybe time, maybe never.

He manages to win an estate from the Earl of Roxbury – a questionable fellow, seemingly determined to gamble his way to ruin.  Val takes this as a sign, and heads off to inspect his new property.  Something to do while he isn’t playing the piano.  When he arrives he discovers the Mrs. FitzEngle – Ellen – whom he met and shared a shattering kiss with some time ago.  He is determined not to let her get away again!  Ellen, we find out, is being blackmailed, and is living a hand to mouth existence regardless of her position.  She is largely ignored by the community and keeps body and soul together by selling flowers and scented soaps in town at the market.  She is a puzzle to Val who is determined to make his own.

This is another delightful story by Grace Burrowes.  I have now read The Heir, The Soldier, and Lady Sophie’s Christmas Wish, and finally The Virtuoso.  I’ve read these books slightly out of order in error.  Each book does not depend on the others to be understood, yet there are characters that are common to all the books, and we learn more about the members of this family that are becoming dear to me!  My most favorite character, the Duke of Moreland, only makes an appearance at the end of this book.  He’s a crusty old character that thinks himself wise, yet is played continually by his wife.  He’s delightful, he allows himself to meddle in his children’s lives in ways that drive his children to distraction.  There is an outstanding scene that describes this in the next book – stay tuned for that review!  For this book, there is a discussion between St Just, the Soldier brother and Val that brought me to tears.  In this scene St Just describes just how important Val is to him.

“You ass.” St. Just stepped closer and fisted a hand in the hair at the nape of Val’s neck.  “Do you really think without a piano bench under your backside you aren’t worth the ducal associations?  Is that what this subterfuge is about?  Denying you’re Moreland’s legitimate  son because you are only a mere mortal, not a god of the keyboard, due to a simple sore hand?”

Val glanced at his hand. “I didn’t think you’d noticed.”

“You didn’t think I’d noticed?”  St. Just growled and shook him a little, as if he were a naughty puppy.  “When I came back from Waterloo, you played for hours and hours just so I could sleep.  You fetched me home from certain death and they played me a lifeline.  When I went haring off to York, you spent the damned winter up there just to make sure I was coping adequately.  You are the first friend Winnie has made and when she can’t tell me or Emmie what’s wrong, she bangs at that piano until Scout’s ears hurt.  You tucked us in each night with lullabies, you interceded for me with the biddies, you…Damn you.”

“Damn you, too.” Val stepped close, and mostly to give himself a moment to swallow back the lump in his throat, hugged his brother.  “Sometimes” – he dropped his forehead to St. Just’s shoulder – “I wonder if it isn’t all a lot of noise.  It’s good to know somebody was listening.”

“I was listening.  I heard every note, Val” St. Just held him a little tighter then let him step back.  “Every note.”

St. Just shot him a look then, one that allowed val to see just ahint of the weary soldier St. just had been, a hint of the despair and beliderment that had followed him and so many others home from Waterloo.

“Write,” Val said, unwilling to hold that gaze.  “I promise to reply within two years at least.”

So….keep a box of kleenex by your side, find a comfy chair and a few uninterrupted hours and immerse yourself in the beautiful story telling of Grace Burrowes.

According to Ms. Burrowes’ site (http://graceburrowes.com/  ) “September 29, 2011 • Christmas came early for me and the Windham family with the October 1 release of Lady Sophie’s Christmas Wish. We reach the half way mark in the eight-sibling family series on November 1 with the release of Valentine’s story, The Virtuoso. Watch this space for the giveaway and blog tour celebrating the arrival of both books, and look for Val and Sophie to pop up on the tour — the Windhams are not a biddable bunch!”  It seems like there is more to learn about the Windham’s in the future!

If you are interested in winning a copy of this book, and have a Canadian or US mailing address, just fill out the form and I’ll announce the winner in a week or so.

Reese’s Bride by Kat Martin

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Today is Series Sunday on Sugarbeat’s Books!  Every Sunday I’m posting a review of a book in a series – in the order that they are supposed to be read!  Nothing worse than reading out of order 🙂  Today is the second book in Kat Martin’s Bride Series – Reese’s Bride.  Although I like the fist book in the series, I had some problems with errors in this book as you will read.  Let me know your thoughts on historical and other inaccuracies in books.  Do they drive you batty?

Reese’s Bride by Kat Martin
ISBN: 0778327442
Publisher : MIRA
Release: Dec 29, 2009
Source: I purchased a copy of this book to read and review

Wounded in battle, Major Reese Dewar returns to England—but his injuries are nothing compared to his shattered heart
Years ago, love-struck Reese departed his home at Briarwood with a promise from raven-haired Elizabeth Clemens that she would make a life with him upon his return. But mere months later, she married the Earl of Aldridge, attaining wealth and status Reese could never match. Memories of that betrayal make his homecoming far more bitter than sweet.
Seeing Elizabeth on his doorstep dressed in widow’s garb twists the knife even deeper. But fear for her young son’s safety has overcome her pride: she begs Reese for protection from those who would see the boy dead to possess his fortune. He agrees to an uneasy alliance, sensing Elizabeth still harbors deep secrets—and Reese knows that he’s placing himself in danger…of losing his heart all over again.

Reese’s Bride is the second book in Kat Martin’s latest trilogy. This story starts with Elizabeth Clemens, now the Countess of Aldridge, showing up on Reese Dewar’s doorstep with her son in tow, in desperate need of his assistance. She is seeking protection from her brother-in-law whom she is believes is trying to kill her son, and is drugging her. Her son stands in her brother-in-law’s way of inheriting the title of Earl. Reese and Elizabeth have a history, and she is the last person that Reese wants to see; especially now that he is back from fighting the war with a damaged leg!

Major Reese Dewar left home several years ago to serve his country with a promise from Elizabeth that she would marry him when he returned. Due to a pregnancy from their one night of passion, Elizabeth’s father forces her into marriage with the Earl of Aldridge. Reese feels betrayed that Elizabeth didn’t wait for him, but was unaware of her pregnancy. To protect Elizabeth and her son, Reese marries her and offers her the protection of his name and his brother the duke.

The story then turns into 2 stories. The first one is Reese, his brothers and their friends working to clear the name of their friend Travis, who has been accused of spying for the Russians. The second one is the love story between Reese and Elizabeth. As in all good love stories, Elizabeth tries to hide the secret of the identity of her son’s father and when Reese finds out, there are some fireworks. Reese and Elizabeth try several methods to get Elizabeth’s brother-in-law off their backs but they seem to spend more time clearing Travis’s name.

What distracted me in this story were the issues with editing!! There were inconsistencies in several places in the book. There were two obvious ones that I felt someone should have caught before the book went to print. Firstly, Travis, Reese’s friend who lost an arm in the Crimea puts his hands (plural) on Annabelle’s shoulders several times. Secondly, towards the end of the book, we find Reese getting busy with his lovely wife and unzips his pants. This story is supposed to be set in 1855. There are no zippers on any pants in 1855. Modern zippers were invented in 1917 and not in common use on men’s pants until around 1937. I don’t have any trouble with some literary license, but someone editing this book should have caught this historical inaccuracy!!

Aside from the inconsistencies, this is a good story.  It engrosses the reader and serves as a good second book for this series.  I am looking forward to the third book in the series!

“Reese’s Bride is hot, sexy and mesmerizing. The pages are rich with history, taut with tension and steaming with passion.” RT Book Reviews
