Author Interview

Guest Post & Giveaway- Debora Dennis author of The Kandy Shoppe

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Books – The Home of the Romance Novel

Today Debora Dennis, author of The Kandy Shoppe is visiting! She is touring The Kandy Shoppe as part of a Goddessfishproduction tour. Debora is giving away a $25.00 gift card to one person who leaves a comment on this tour.  So after you have finished reading all there is to read, leave a comment with your e-mail address so that we can enter you in the giveaway!  Enjoy!

Barb – Tell us about your new release

Debora – The Kandy Shoppe is an erotic novella set in an old fashioned ice cream parlor making it a lot of fun to write! I got the idea for these characters one hot summer day standing in front of the ice cream freezers at my local grocery store. Sometimes it’s funny where inspiration will hit!

Barb –  What’s the official blurb for your book?

Debora – Kandace Parker wants nothing more than to have a thriving ice cream parlor, but her run down equipment isn’t cooperating. Watching her profits melt away each time her freezer breaks is only half her problem – the other half is her sexy repairman, Jason Chapman.

Jason is man enough to admit he’s made some mistakes in his personal life; the biggest one was pushing Kandy away years ago. He knows the Ice Cream Queen won’t willingly give him a second chance, so he devises a plan to keep him front and center in her life with the hopes of wearing her down.

How far will Jason go to get his second chance? How far will Kandy go to keep her freezer running? When desires collide in The Kandy Shoppe, they will have to decide if decadent sex is enough or if love can be the best dessert.

Barb –  Tell me a little about yourself.

Debora – Hmmm, let’s see. For the most part I’m just your average wife and mother of three. I adore my two cats and talk to them all the time. Most days I’m pretty glad they can’t talk back. Then I sit down at my computer, armed with coffee and chocolate (lots of both!) and I lose myself in the fantasy world in my head. Yes, I hear voices (but I probably shouldn’t admit that, right?)

Barb –  Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Debora – Yes and no. I’ve always heard the characters and their stories in my head and always wanted to write and get them out. However, I did go through a stage in high school when I wanted to be an archeologist, a dream quickly squashed by a neighbor when she informed me I needed to learn several foreign languages. I went to college for accounting instead. (No, that didn’t work out either.)

Barb –  What’s the hardest part of writing a book?

Debora – The hardest part for me is staying focused on one project at a time! I keep a notebook close by to jot down the inspirations for other stories close by for just that reason. Of course, my family blames the caffeine for my lack of attention, but what do they know?

Barb –  What’s your favorite part of writing a book?

Debora – The characters and their world! I love spending time with my hero and heroine and watching their lives and their problems unfold in my head.

Barb –  What are your favorite books and author?

Debora – To be honest, my favorite books and authors change over time. I’ve always loved the sweeping historical romances of Bertrice Small. Right now I’ve also been enjoying the more lighthearted stories of Sandra Hill.

Barb –  What book is currently on your nightstand?

Debora – Funny, but it’s not a romance at all. I’m currently reading the fascinating memoir of Keith Richards. His book “Life” reads like fiction at times and with each chapter I am more and more amazed the man is still alive to tell his tales.

Barb –  What project’s are you currently working on right now? Would you mind sharing them with us?

Debora – I have a time travel novella that will available soon. “A Knight in Her Arms” is in final revisions right now and my gorgeous cover will be posted on my website soon! I’m currently writing another paranormal romance set in a 1950’s style diner that involves a couple of matchmaking ghosts.

Barb –  How can readers stay in touch?

Debora – Being that I am addicted to social media these days, I love to chat with my readers at all the usual places like facebook,  Twitter ,  Goodreads and of course, my personal blog

Barb – Where is your work available?

Debora – You can find my books for sale at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, All Romance Ebooks and almost every place else that ebooks are available for sale!

One sexy repairman, a little melting ice cream, and a lot of red-hot desire just might give dessert a whole new meaning.

Kandace Parker wants nothing more than to have a thriving ice cream parlor, but her run down equipment isn’t cooperating. Watching her profits melt away each time her freezer breaks is only half her problem – the other half is her sexy repairman, Jason Chapman.

About Debora Dennis:

Hooked on all things romantic for as long as she can remember, Debora Dennis has never stopped believing in the fairy tale dream of a Happily Ever After. Since picking up her first Barbara Cartland novel from the middle school library so many years ago, she’s rarely been without a romance, either in her bag or on her nightstand (and now on her Nook!)

A firm believer in happy endings, she writes romance sprinkled with spice and adventure.

Debora and her own hero live in New York and spend their days raising their three kids along with Godzilla the lizard and two spoiled cats named Oreo and Rocky. She can usually be found at her computer early in the morning and late at night with a mug of coffee and a bag of Lindt chocolate truffles keeping her sane.

Interview with Tara Woolpy author of Releasing Gillian’s Wolves

By Barb Drozdowich

Welcome to Sugarbeat’s Book – the Home of the Romance Novel

Today we are talking to Tara Woolpy, author of Releasing Gillian’s Wolves.

I’m looking forward to introducing Tara to you, and encouraging you to read her book!  As soon as I clear off the 150 odd books on my teetering TBR pile, this book is certainly on my list!  That is as soon as my husband’s back is turned and I can sneak it into the house!  Without further ado, here’s Tara!

Barb – How would you describe Releasing Gillian’s Wolves in 20 words or less without using the blurb?

Tara – Her congressman husband has never been faithful. His latest is twenty. Fed up, Gillian meets Luke, her happy ending.

Barb – Tell me a little about yourself.

Tara – I’m a semi-retired biologist who teaches online and writes novels in her spare time. I live in lovely Northern Wisconsin with my wonderful husband and our very friendly boston terrier.

Barb –  Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Tara – Yes. I spent my twenties writing poems, short stories and a very bad first novel which no one will ever read. Unfortunately that didn’t pay the rent, so I went back to school and became a college biology professor. A few years ago I stepped away from full time teaching and gratefully returned to writing.

Barb –  What do you love about writing?

Tara – That’s a great question. I love losing myself in the process. It’s addictive. I think I’d have to go into rehab if I wanted to quit.

Barb –  What’s the hardest part of writing a book?

Tara – For me there’s a section in the middle of the first draft that feels like trudging through a mosquito infested swamp. If I can slog through that I know the rest will be comparatively easy.

Barb – Which character do you most relate to – or like the most?

Tara – When I was deep into Releasing Gillian’s Wolves I heard a radio program about the science of personality. I came away with an image of personality as a multi-headed snake with each head a different aspect of an individual’s personality. That resonated for me because there are aspects me in of Gillian, Edward and Sam. But of course, my favorite character has to be Luke. I find him incredibly sexy.

Barb –  What was your favorite scene?

Tara – It’s probably my quirky sense of humor but I love the STD clinic scene. First because it’s such a twenty-first century seduction moment and secondly because the seduction… well, if you’ve read it, you know.

Barb – Who are your cheerleaders? Who keep you writing?

Tara – My oldest friend (ok, she’s only a year older than me), my terrifically supportive husband and my dog, who curls up in the chair behind me as I write.

Barb – Where do you get your inspiration?

Tara – I get my inspiration from everything around me. I slice up memories from my life and mix them with overheard conversations, articles I read in the paper, scenes from movies and novels, whatever is available and cook them into a literary stone soup.

Barb – What book is currently on your nightstand?

Tara – This is going to sound pretentious, but I’m currently reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Don’t worry, I’m balancing it out with the audio version of a lovely mystery, The Sculptress, by Sandra Burr.

Barb –  If you could ask your readers one question, what would it be?

Tara – Tell me about the Jack in your life. A friend of mine said that Jack is everyone’s first husband. Obviously cheating husbands aren’t the universal experience, but all of us have been betrayed once or twice. I’d love to know how Gillian’s experience of that compares to what my readers have lived through.

Barb – How can readers stay in touch?

Tara – I recently opened a twitter account under the username @TaraWoolpy, although I haven’t posted anything yet. I’m hoping I’ll get the courage to tweet very soon.  I’m also available on email at tara@batsintheboathouse.com and my characters and I occasionally blog at http://www.batsintheboathouse.com/lacland-news-blog.html.

Barb – Where is your work available?

Tara – Releasing Gillian’s Wolves is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and the ebook version will also soon be available at the Apple iBookstore and Sony’s Reader Store.

Barb –  What is in the works for you next?

Tara – I’m in the final editing stage for the next Lacland novel. The Lacland series involves novels with overlapping characters, each told by a different resident of the same fictional small town. This next book is Edward’s story, set a few years down the road from Releasing Gillian’s Wolves, when he and Sam contemplate adopting a child.

We frequently see women standing by their Senator/Congressman/Religious figure husbands at press conferences and wonder why they stay as their spouses admit to all sorts of bad behavior.

Bats in the Boathouse Press is proud to announce the publication of Releasing Gillian’s Wolves, the story of just such a political wife, why she stays and what happens when she finally decides to let go.

Thirty years ago Gillian married Jack Sach, now a United States Congressman. Through the years she’s remained faithful. He hasn’t. Ever. She cooks to soothe herself and others, takes care of her mother-in-law, gardens, sneaks off to the studio to explode with angry paintings and tries to keep Jack’s dalliances secret,. As she nears fifty, her friends think she should leave but she lingers, bound by inertia and fear of the effect media coverage of a divorce would have on her family.

Gillian shares a trust fund with Edward, her gay neighbor and best friend. Their grandfathers made a fortune together and left it to the two of them. Over the years, in support of Gillian’s marriage, the trust bankrolled Jack’s many successful campaigns. Not particularly interested in politics, Gillian survives by ignoring everything outside her kitchen, garden and studio. Edward has his own ragged past filled with bad relationships, drugs and alcohol. Through the course of a summer, Gillian’s marriage continues to deteriorate while Edward’s life finally starts to improve. He’s sober, stable and has just found life-changing love with Sam, a Biology professor at the local university. Their happiness shines a stark light on Gillian’s loveless marriage. Finally, when Gillian meets Jack’s latest conquest, twenty-year-old Ashley, she’s forced to confront the rot at the core of her relationship. She travels to Amsterdam, meets Luke, an intriguing Dutch sculptor, and discovers it is never too late for happiness.

Bio:  Tara Woolpy’s writing career has followed a somewhat unusual trajectory. Throughout her twenties and early thirties she worked hard to learn her craft. Her formal studies included a B.A. in English Literature from Whitworth College and a post graduate year at the Women Writers Center in Cazenovia, New York. In the 1980’s she published poems and short stories in small feminist journals, freelanced for an independent Seattle newspaper and wrote the novel destined for the bottom drawer. Eventually returning to school, she earned a couple graduate degrees in aquatic science and has spent the last several years in that field, most recently as a tenured professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. As such she published peer-reviewed technical papers and book chapters and edited reams of student writing. Now that she teaches online, she has returned to fiction.

Releasing Gillian’s Wolves is far from autobiographical. However, tidbits from Tara’s personal history are woven into the novel. She imbibed campaigns and politics with her mother’s milk, her mother represented Northern Idaho in the State Senate for seven terms. She currently lives in a house very like Edward’s, works in Sam’s academic field, has survived more than one bad marriage. She has also finally found her own happy ending on a lake in Northern Wisconsin with a wonderful supportive husband and a very friendly Boston terrier.

On her way to happily ever after, Tara has published under a number of last names (Woolpy, Reed, Danaan and Reed-Andersen).

I’d like to thank Tara for sharing a bit of herself and her new book with us today!  It is of my honest opinion that since this book is written by a scientist – it must be good 🙂  All kidding aside, I love what I’ve heard about this book.  Drop by and pick up a copy and let us know what you think of it!

A little about Tory Richards…

Tory is a multi-published, best-selling author who was born in Maine but lives in Florida with three crazy cats. She likes to travel, preferably by cruise ship, and doesn’t like to fly but she will if she has to. She collects antiques and art, loves chocolate (who doesn’t?) and good coffee.

Tory has wanted to be a writer since she was a kid, but life got in the way of her dreams. A few years ago, with the support and encouragement of her family, she decided to get serious. Her romances are laced with humor and filled with suspense and sizzling sex.

And now a short excerpt….

“Damn it to hell!” Ryan swore under his breath, after Shannon took off. The kitchen door was still swinging back and forth and he could hear her running up the stairs. He should have known she’d be there. After all, she was part of the family. And always would be now that she had Alivia.

Why the hell had he come home? He knew the answer to that the minute the thought materialized. Because of the vow he’d made to David. But that was only the half of it.

He dropped his fork, made a tight fist, anxious to hit someone. If flying shrapnel hadn’t wounded him, and he didn’t have a leg on the mend he probably wouldn’t have come back. He could have remained on base during the holidays. Only the thought of staying there alone hadn’t been very appealing. And maybe deep down he’d wanted to see Shannon again. Wanted to see if he still found her as attractive as he had the first time he’d laid his eyes on her.

It was worse than he remembered. The years he’d remained away had been for nothing, he could see that now. What he’d thought had diminished over time had sprung to life the moment he’d opened the front door and fell headfirst into her cat-like eyes. Every time he made the mistake of looking at her sensuous mouth all he wanted to do was grab her and kiss her breathless.

Maybe he was being punished for all the lives he’d taken. Slowly being driven insane by a woman he couldn’t have. Everyone had to pay penance for their sins but did it have to come in the way of his dead brother’s wife? The only thing he could hope for was that Shannon never realized how he felt. And the only way that could happen was to stay the hell away from her.

Releasing an angry breath he got to his feet, taking his plate to the fridge, his appetite gone now. He might as well get a shower and turn in, and pray for a night of relief. As he limped through the house, he flipped off the lights, and grabbed his duffel bag before heading up stairs. The heat from the shower would do his leg good.

His bedroom was the first one at the top of the stairs. It was only natural to open the door without knocking. He had no reason to believe he’d find anyone in there. But as the door swung open the first thing his gaze landed on was that his bed had been turned down, the playpen and then the huge suitcase on the floor next to it.

The second thing he noticed was humming coming from the bathroom…
